Celebrate New Year in Style
We’re getting ever so close to waving farewell to 2019 and seeing in 2020, a new year and a new decade too! So where to head for the ultimate New Year’s Eve celebrations? You’re spoilt for choice, that’s for sure, but here are some of our favourite destinations to provide you with some inspiration.
If you’re heading to Rio de Janeiro for 31st December celebrations then we can assure you that you’re in for an experience of a lifetime. The dress code is ‘wear white’ and you can join the locals and other visitors as they head to Brazilian beaches to throw flowers into the sea at midnight (a tradition for the African sea goddess, Yemanjá). Then it’s back up onto the streets for a night of food, drinks and dancing, a New Year you absolutely won’t forget in a hurry..
Where to stay? The Belmond Hotel in Copacabana (link https://www.belmond.com/hotels/south-america/brazil/rio-de-janeiro/belmond-copacabana-palace/penthouse-suites) boasts incredible views of the beaches where all the action takes place (including fireworks), these look even better from the penthouse suite balcony.
Spain is a truly fantastic place to see in the New Year, particularly when they have a rather interesting tradition every year at midnight! As the clock chimes 12, locals attempt to eat 12 grapes (one for every clock chime), it’s a lot harder than it sounds but if managed, you can expect a lucky year to follow… worth a shot then!
Spain is all about the food on New Year’s Eve and a number of hotels and restaurants hold specific NYE parties with menus to die for, but be sure to book ahead to ensure you don’t miss out!
Where to stay? We do love the Ritz in Madrid however it’s currently closed for extensive renovation so we also recommend the Westin Palace (hyperlink:https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/madwi-the-westin-palace-madrid/). Based in the very centre of Madrid, you couldn’t find a more perfect location for exploring all that the city has to offer during your stay.
The opportunity to welcome in 2020 on the streets of Tokyo is just too good to miss! What’s incredible about the city is that they celebrate things a little differently. Of course, some places hold the fireworks and the parties but overall the traditional way to enjoy NYE is at one of the country’s majestic and historic temples. Midnight is welcomed in by monks chiming bells exactly 108 times (A Buddhist custom to be cleansed of 108 world desires). New Year’s Day is also a big deal, as many stay up to watch the city bathed in the glow of the first sunrise of the year. It’s stunning, it’s memorable and it’s a change of pace.
Where to stay: The Four Seasons (hyperlink: https://www.fourseasons.com/tokyo/?seo=google_local_mar1_apac) is a boutique hideaway found right in the middle of downtown Tokyo. Their onsite restaurant and bar MOTIF provides exquisite, Michelin star French cuisine, and drinks can be enjoyed with panoramic views of the Tokyo skyline
Paris comes alive (even more so than usual) on the evening of the31st Dec! The Champ-Elysees is full of people lining the streets with champagne in hand to see the fireworks take place over the Eiffel Tower, but not before a spectacular 20 minute video show is projected onto the Arc de Triomphe. If you’re in Paris for the food then choose wisely as the choices are huge. The Eiffel Tower itself has a stunning Michelin star menu (which we’ve spoken about previously here – link to Paris blog), and there’s also the two Michelin starred restaurant L’abeille, a French gastronomic delight!
Where to stay: For prime position, La Reserve (hyperlink https://www.lareserve-paris.com/en/special-offers/discover-la-reserve/) is based just off the Champ-Elysees and is home to ‘the quintessence of Parisian chic’. It’s the perfect spot to be in the centre of all the action but with the option of peace and tranquility when you want it.
We couldn’t talk about New Year’s celebrations without a nod to the iconic and famous Sydney fireworks. They’re to be seen to be believed and you’re guaranteed to never leave feeling less than wow’ed. December is right in the middle of their Australian summer so you can expect a warm evening whilst you enjoy a glass of champagne before the fireworks. Sydney Opera House also holds a musical event where guests can then watch the colourful spectacle from their balcony – a prime vantage point.
Where to stay: The Park Hyatt (https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/australia/park-hyatt-sydney/sydph?src=corp_lclb_gmb_seo_aspac_sydph) overlooks Sydney Harbour, you couldn’t get any closer if you tried. It’s a stunning location in the heart of the party and surrounded by luxury!
